We recently wrote a review of Top Cloth Simulation Engines alternatives to Marvelous Designer animation option. But what is actually cloth simulation vs Marvelous Designer animation?
Using the Marvelous Designer software, you can create clothes for your 3D models and simulate realistic looking fabric properties.
Cloth Simulation in Marvelous Designer
The Marvelous Designer cloth simulation engine feature simulates the clothing item or items on your 3D character, this means, that each time you modify your Avatar’s posture, the item of clothing will realistically hang and drape to suit its pose.
MarvelousDesigner enables you to produce lovely life-like wrinkles, creases, pleats, and folds for your 3D clothes for every posture of your 3D model/ Avatar or 3D creature.
You can also pluck, roll up, tuck or twist and arrange how you wish the garment to look on your model, as well as take advantage of the Marvelous Designer wind tool to whirl and blow your clothing if you need to add movement to your garments.
However, for animations, there are better cloth simulation engines which are faster and handle more reliably than Marvelous Designer the soft body dynamics and issues that can often arise when cloth touches cloth or parts of the avatar.
What is Cloth Simulation?
Cloth Simulation is the simulation of soft bodies in the form of a two-dimensional continuum elastic membranes, producing a visually plausible emulation of textiles and clothing, used in a variety of contexts in video games, animation, and film. In video games it is often used to enhance the realism of clothed characters, which otherwise would need to be fully animated.
Cloth simulators are generally using soft body dynamics. Soft body dynamics focuses on visually realistic physical simulations of the motion and properties of deformable objects (or soft bodies).
The scope of soft body dynamics includes the simulation of soft organic materials such as muscle, fat, hair and vegetation, as well as other deformable materials such as clothing and fabric.
Several physics engines currently provide software for soft-body simulation and Marvelous Designer is one of them.

Cloth Animation Vs Cloth Simulation
If you need a 3D garment to look life-like realistic at a particular pose of your 3D model/Avatar you simulate it. This can easily be done in Marvelous Designer. Typically it takes a few minutes – or much longer time (depending on what machine you use, quadros, graphics card/s and available CPU/ GPU etc.) to simulate the garment on a new pose in high-resolution detailed result with fine folds and creases.
However, for cloth animations like when you need it for games, where your characters move and interact with each other in real-time, or for CFX, i.e., cloth animation in films, much computing power is needed for fast simulations and many issues can arise – such as soft-body collisions, cloth deformations and intersections so you must use a powerful cloth simulation engine that can handle these issues.
In Marvelous Designer you can animate your clothes on your 3D model but their simulation engine is not the best solution for games or films. It’s OK for YT video presenting a fashion item, like the garments we created and animated here in this Marvelous Designer dynamic clothes animation demo:
