Marvelous Designer Segment Darts Review and Tutorial
In Marvelous Designer 7, you can now quickly create segment darts on your patterns.
What is a segment dart? A segment dart is a dart created around a segment point on a clothing pattern’s segment line (edge).
What are darts in general?
Darts are used in the real-world to tighten certain parts of clothes, take in loose fabric, and create clothes tailored to the model’s body with a snug fit and an elegant dart sewing line. While you can often take in loose fabric in Marvelous Designer by simply modifying the clothing pattern’s shape, darts are still sometimes used in creating tailored 3D clothes.
This new segment dart tool in Marvelous Designer 7 speeds up the dart creation process.
Below is a short tutorial on how to create segment darts in Marvelous Designer 7 as well as a tutorial how to achieve the same result using Marvelous Designer 6 (and earlier versions).
Here is how to create segment darts in Marvelous Designer 7:
Use the Split Line/Add Point tool to create a segment point where you’d like your dart to be.
Using the “Edit Pattern” tool right-click on the segment point and click “Add Dart”.
A popup box will appear where you can set the width and length of your dart.
The “Total Width” changes the total width of the lines to the left and right of your center segment point.
So if you type 50 mm in this box, each of the segment lines will be 25 mm in width.
The “Dart Arm Width” controls the width of the segment lines on either side of the center segment point.
So if you type 20 mm, the lines will be 20 mm on either side of the point (with a “Total Width” of 40 mm).
You can type a number into either the “Total Width” or the “Dart Arm Width” to change the width of your dart.
The dart “Length” setting will control the depth of your dart (the blue line which in the example above is 70 mm long).
Depending on your clothing pattern and design, you may want a narrow dart which cuts deep into the clothes or a fat (wider) dart which doesn’t cut very deep into hte fabric. Play with it, experiment, and see what works best for your design.
The dart on your pattern will interactively update as you change the numbers in the settings box.
Once you have the dart as you want it, click “OK” to create the dart.
The dart will automatically be sewn together so no further action is required to create it.
Here is an example of a generated segment dart:
If you don’t like the width of length of the dart, you can always select the segment points and move them around on your pattern to refine the dart’s position and size.
To delete a segment dart, simply click on the center segment point, hit delete on your keyboard or right-click and select “Delete”.
How to create segment darts in Marvelous Designer 6 or earlier versions?
Simple. Create the initial segment point where you want the dart to be, then right-click on the segment line on either side of the segment point using your Split Line/Add Point tool.
When you right-click on a segment line using this tool, a popup box will appear asking you how you’d like to split the line.
Type in the same number as you’d type into the “Dart Arm Width” box. This will add a segment point at that distance from the initial segment point.
Repeat on the other side. You’ll have this result of 3 segment points:
Now using the Edit Pattern tool, click on the center segment point and holding down your Shift key, drag it downwards in a straight line like so.
You can control how deep your dart is by dragging the segment point down as far as you want.
Lastly, select the Segment Sewing tool and click on the two inner segment lines to sew the dart together.
And here below is the final segment dart. The result is the same like using the Marvelous Designer 7 segment dart tool.
We hope this Marvelous Designer segment dart tutorial helps you!
