Some people have asked how to change the Marvelous Designer avatar’s texture and skin color and import custom texture maps.
In this tutorial you’ll learn how to change the avatar’s skin color, skin texture, hair color and texture, eye color, and shoe color/texture in Marvelous Designer.
You’ll also see how ambient maps and avatar skin specular shininess settings affect the look of the avatar.
You can change the default Marvelous Designer avatar’s textures as well as the color/texture of any custom imported avatars.
Changing the avatar’s texture can make the avatar look like a plastic doll, a wooden mannequin, a shiny metallic mannequin, a flat 2D avatar or a green alien.
How to change a Marvelous Designer avatar’s texture:
1. Click anywhere on the body of the Marvelous Designer default avatar or the avatar you imported.
2. In the Property Editor (on the right side of your screen), under the “Material (Selected)” options, click on the square icon to the right of “Diffuse Color”.
3. A popup box will appear. Select the desired color to tint the avatar’s skin texture. Note: the avatar’s body is highlighted in yellow so any color you apply will be affected by the yellow overlay. Once you confirm your color choice and click off the avatar’s body (click on the background) you’ll see the real color which was applied to the avatar’s texture.
As you can see, the color is only affecting one part of the avatar’s body. If you want to change all of the avatar’s skin texture or color at once, before selecting your desired skin color, hold down shift and click on all the avatar’s body parts (for the default Marvelous Designer avatars you only need to select body, arms, and head).
Example of avatar with same texture color applied across the entire body:
If you wish to change the avatar’s skin texture, delete the diffuse map to get rid of all the skin detail or load in a modified/alternate diffuse map.
To load in a different diffuse map, click the square icon besides the trash can icon.
Here is an example of the Marvelous Designer default avatar with different diffuse maps applied:
The diffuse map is basically a color texture map which gets wrapped around the avatar’s body. You can load in any sized texture map to create interesting mannequins. If you don’t want to see edge lines where the texture repeats, import a seamless texture map.
The diffuse map of the default Marvelous Designer avatar has detail such as skin, moles, the fake painted bra and underwear etc.
The ambient map adds some extra realistic shadows and color around different parts of the avatar’s body.
Here is an example of the default Marvelous Designer avatar without a diffuse skin texture map and with and without an ambient texture map:
You can also delete the ambient map and then just use the ambient color to control the ambient effect’s intensity.
Here is an example of the avatar with a very bright ambient color:
Here is the same avatar with black ambient color applied:
You can also change the avatar’s skin Specular Map, color, and Shininess settings. Here is an example of different “Shininess” settings:
Changing the avatar’s texture opacity can have a rather queer result:
You can also tint the color of the default Marvelous Designer hairs and change the color and texture of their avatar’s shoes by clicking on the hair/shoe and then selecting a different diffuse color in the Property Editor.
Changing the color and texture of any imported avatar (such as clothing accessories, zippers, buttons, belt buckles, hangers, etc.) works the same way. Simply click on the part you want to change and modify the textures and colors in the Property Editor.
We hope this Marvelous Designer avatar texture tutorial helps you, and can’t wait to see what avatars you’ll create!
